Since 1982 hand guns have been banned in Chicago. Thats certain to be overturned in the wake of the supreme court ruling this week. Daily said “As long as I’m mayor, we will never give up or give in to gun violence that continues to threaten every part of our nation, including Chicago,” The new ordinance will ban gun shops in the city limits, prohibit a lawful gun owner from stepping outside their homes, even onto their porches or garages with their weapon. In addition to Limiting the number of handguns residents can register to one per month and prohibit residents from having more than one handgun in operating order at any given time. Require residents in homes with children to keep them in lock boxes or equipped with trigger locks. Require prospective gun owners to take a four-hour class and one-hour training at a gun range. Prohibit people from owning a gun if they were convicted of a violent crime, domestic violence or two or more convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Residents convicted of a gun offense would have to register with the police department. OK I do agree with some of these provisions, such has trigger locks and locked gun cabinets especially if you have children in the house with guns. Thats just common sense. And I don’t know anywhere where a convicted felon can legally own a gun. But limiting to the number of operational handguns to one, and restricting a private citizens movements and actions on his own property is just well just criminal. Daily flanked by activists and the parents of a teenager who was gunned down, has some disillusionment that stricter gun control laws curbs violence. After a 28 year ban of outright ownership of handguns in the city has there been any progress at all through gun control? Violence is violence and has nothing to do with the method of which that violence is carried out. Case in point just over the past two months how many high profile rampage stabbings have we seen in China? The lasting effect is no different than if all these had involved guns. And by blaming the violence on guns does not address the issue of the violence itself. And I’m sure the activists standing with mayor Daily mean well but their efforts are shortsighted and does not address the conditions and causes of the nature of the violence itself. Im not saying all gun control is bad all Im saying with everything else we should let common sense guide us. Gun Control advocates really want to ban guns period, but they can’t so they do the next best thing thats restrict guns. The thought is simple, less guns less gun related deaths, and yes that would be true, but it wouldn’t curb the violence, just the method of the violence. Most murders in the US are committed by someone we know and is mostly a crime of passion. Would taking the gun away curb the violence brewing in volatile relationships? Simply put no, whether there is a gun in the house or not the violent elements are still there and will end the same way. And then there’s the gang violence, you really think any amount of gun control is going to take the guns out of their hands? Nope not a bit, If that were the case then how come after 28 years of a hand gun ban there has been absolutely no progress at all. A few arrests here and there and the gangs still better armed than the local cops, and they are still killing each other and innocent people. And the only way to stop it is to address the violence, not the method.
